NFC communication is activated by approximating two NFC compliant devices to each other up to a few centimeters. NFC applications include contactless transactions, such as payment and mass transportation tickets, simple and fast data transfers, such as calendar synchronization or e-business cards, and access to digital content.

2- How will you experience NFC?

NFC facilitates life. It is now very easy to receive information, make payments, use mass transportation, and share data between devices thanks to NFC. You should simply approximate two NFC compliant devices up to 4 cm. The possible features of NFC are so attractive that many brands have already started to use NFC technology to improve their services and customer experiences. NFC compliant services are not only fast and easy-to-use but also do ensure the continuity of existing service security.

3- What are the products that we use in daily life, which are planned to be NFC compliant?

Many devices can be made compliant with NFC technology and may facilitate our lives. NFC technology enables to read the information, which was uploaded to the objects that we use in our daily lives through tags, via our mobile phones. These tags can be placed on posters, bus stop signs, street signs, drugs, certificates, packed products and many other objects.
How can NFC technology facilitate your life?
Many of us pass by several posters and billboards during the day. We see most of them but we can’t participate to a campaign that we were interested in mostly because we forget them. If NFC compliant tags are placed on the posters and billboards, we can read the tags via our NFC compliant mobile phones and benefit from the campaigns without forgetting them.
NFC compliant tags can also be placed on parking tickets, credit cards and moneys to prove their authenticity. NFC hologram is resistant to unauthorized duplication and it can be canceled easily in case it is stolen. NFC ensures simple and easy connections. For example, if you simply keep your Bluetooth speaker kit close to your mobile phone, you can establish a connection between these two devices.

5- How will NFC technology facilitate payments and ticketing?

NFC ensures that contactless tickets and cards are included to the electronic devices, such as mobile phones, that we carry everyday. So, you can prefer to carry some or all of your cards within your NFC compliant mobile phone instead of carrying them physically in your wallet. It will be enough to show your NFC device to point of payment in order to make the payment.
NFC technology also enables you to make payments at POS and unmanned payment points (parking meters, vending machines, etc.). You can carry your mass transportation and other tickets in your mobile phone too. You can quickly pass through the turnstiles in concerts with the ticket loaded to your mobile phone and take your seat. You can immediately see your balance of mass transportation tickets and, if necessary, add more credits.
You can download information quickly by approximating your NFC compliant mobile phone or PDA to posters and tags that can be read through NFC. For example, you can download bus/train schedules from such a poster that is hanged on the bus stops to your mobile phone and access them at any time and from anywhere you want.

6- What will be the benefits of NFC technology for business?

NFC technology provides simplicity and convenience. End consumers and employees can access to various services, read the content that they downloaded, connect to local networks, make payments, or show their e-tickets by keeping their NFC compliant devices close to NFC readers. Many companies are controlling the access to their premises and even local networks through contactless identity cards. NFC may decrease the cost of issuing and managing these cards. NFC compliant devices may also simplify access to company networks. When NFC technology begins to be used within an office, WLAN settings, printer definitions and even building layouts can be detected by NFC compliant devices and mobile employees can be allowed to begin their works quickly at any place within the office.

7- What are the factors for commercial success of NFC technology?

There are four main reasons of adoption of NFC technology by service providers and device manufacturers:

Low cost of electronic issue. Operators that are issuing multiple tickets, such as mass transportation or event ticketing operators, have seen that their costs have significantly been reduced thanks to electronic ticketing. Airlines have also migrated to security sensitive e-ticket in order to reduce the costs.

Increase in income received from interactive services. Mobile network operators and content providers gain income from utilization of value added services by the users. NFC surrounds the user with advertisements and valuable information that the user can easily achieve.

NFC compliant devices are directing the consumption of rich media content. NFC is not a trending technology, which would be nice to have, but it facilitates the lives. Making payments for services and products, using mass transportation, and sharing data between two devices become simpler and easier with NFC.
Ease-of-use is one of the most important benefits of NFC. Keeping two objects close to each other is very easy for everyone regardless of being young or old. NFC, which is designed on existing systems as a part of our daily life, will take a significant place in our lives as a technology that will be used for years.

9- How NFC technology does work?

Near field communication is built on inductive coupling, through which two circuits that are loosely connected to each other share power and data. It ensures that consumers perform contactless transactions, access the digital content and connect to electronic devices with a single touch. Wireless Bluetooth technology is designed to be used instead of cables in order to establish connection between mobile phones, laptops and other programming and communication devices within an area of 10 m.
Wi-Fi technology is developed for local area networks. It either extends or completely replaces wired network connections of dozens of programming devices located within an area of 100+ meters. ZigBee contactless technology is a standard enabling to control and audit industrial and residential applications within an area of 100+ meters.
IrDA is a communication standard that allows transfer of data through infrared devices within a short distance (less than 1 m). IrDA interfaces are commonly used at computers and mobile phones. RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) is an automatic identification method that can store and use the data remotely by using RFID tags. RFID tags are objects that can be attached to any product and they contain silicon chips, receiving queries from RFID readers/printers or replying to them. Contactless smart cards contain a microprocessor chip, communicating with RFID technology, through card readers. Communication types of contactless cards include ISO/IEC 14443 and FeliCa standards, which allow communicating up to 10 cm.

16- What are the operating modes of NFC devices?

NFC devices are unique as they feature all of reader/writer operating modes, peer-to-peer (P2P) communication or card emulation modes. These different operating modes are based on contactless smart card standards, named ISO/IEC 18092 NFC IP-1 and ISO/IEC 1443. NFC devices can read NFC tags like smart posters in reader/writer mode. Reader/writer mode is compatible with ISO 14443 and FeliCa standards RF interface. Data transfer is possible between two NFC devices in case of peer-to-peer communication mode. You can share Bluetooth or WiFi connection parameters and transfer data, such as virtual business card or digital photographs with your NFC compliant mobile phone. Peer-to-peer communication mode is standardized according to ISO/IEC 18092 standard. In card emulation mode, NFC device acts like a NFC tag. In this mode, NFC device is same as a contactless smart card according to an external reader. This mode ensures implementation of applications, such as contactless payments and e-tickets.

17- What is TSM (Trusted Service Manager)?

This is the organization that securely distributes and manages applications, personalizations, messages and services to users.
